As shown in the figure below, the Earth is in the center and the Moon is around it, with sunlight coming from the distant right to illuminate the right half of the Moon. The light coming from so far away can be seen as parallel light, and the red box indicates the part of the Moon that we can see.

At the first day of the lunar calendar (position1), the moon and the sun are in the same direction on the celestial sphere, so it is almost impossible to see the moon, and the moon phase at this time is called the "new moon" or "new moon". As the moon revolves around the earth, the moon gradually moves eastward in the sky relative to the sun, and gradually separates from the sun, so that around the fourth day of the lunar calendar (position2), we can see a thin crescent moon (the bright part in the red box is very small) in the low sky in the west shortly after the sun sets.
